Their fully composted, pelletised poultry manure avoids the common and often misunderstood problems linked with raw manures. Raw manures typically flood the soil with excessive nitrate-nitrogen, which leads to a range of production issues such as high pest and disease pressure, unpalatable pastures, and poor flavour quality in food crops.
Excess nitrates can also reduce nutritional content and flavour in plants. This occurs because the additional water needed to dilute the high salt index of nitrates also dilutes plant cell contents. Since nitrates are negatively charged, they do not bind to soil colloids, resulting in high leaching losses under irrigation or heavy rain.
Through composting, they have convert unwanted nitrates into more complex nitrogen forms such as amino acids and microbial proteins. These stable, plant-available forms are easier for plants to metabolise, allowing more energy to be directed into growth.
Terra Firma screen their chicken manure compost over a 5mm screen before pelletising to remove sawdust. Unlike other manufacturers who hammermill or crush sawdust and retain it in the compost base, their process separates humified compost from wood waste. This results in a more concentrated, nutrient-rich pellet and reduces the risk of nitrogen drawdown in soil. Nitrogen drawdown occurs when microbes are presented with raw carbon but insufficient nitrogen, depleting soil nitrogen reserves and starving the plant.
